Three fire safety questions that keep you awake

"Are we genuinely compliant - or just hoping for the best?"

Outdated assessments. Controls that look good on paper but don't work in practice. Most businesses discover gaps only when it's too late.

"What happens if there's an unannounced inspection tomorrow?"

Can you show an inspector your emergency procedures? Do staff know evacuation routes? Are your fire safety systems tested and documented?

"Is our assessment tailored to our operation - or a generic template?"

Timber yards aren't warehouses. Manufacturing hot work isn't retail displays. Generic templates miss the risks that actually exist on your site.

Real results, real business

McLaughlan Transport - strengthening safety across a 5-acre site

McLaughlan Transport is a family-owned haulage company in Perth with 50 employees across a five-acre site including cold storage, parking, office space and workshop facilities. They wanted to extend their on-road safety standards across full site operations - but didn't have the in-house expertise to build it from the ground up.

Opus provided a named regional consultant who worked alongside the team to build a safety programme from the ground up: bespoke risk assessments covering transport, equipment, hazardous substances, fire safety and noise exposure. Workplace transport guidance on collision prevention, pedestrian segregation and loading. Role-based e-learning delivered through Compliance Cloud. Ongoing one-to-one support to help the team maintain continuous compliance.

Result: compliance became a shared team goal with real-time visibility through Compliance Cloud - not one person's burden.

What makes Opus different

Most consultants fill in templates and move on. We assess your actual operation.

Ex-enforcer expertise

Our team is built on enforcement experience. We've conducted fire safety inspections across manufacturing, warehousing and builders merchants. We know what regulators look for - and what actually protects your business.

Sector-specialist approach

Timber yards aren't warehouses. Manufacturing hot work isn't retail. We specialise in the sectors where operational complexity creates real fire risk. Tailored assessments, not copy-paste compliance.

Bespoke, not template

We look at your business and the reality of your situation. Our actions are practical and proportionate - we won't recommend expensive, disruptive work that doesn't benefit you just to tick a box.

Sectors we specialise in

Fire safety isn't generic. Your risks aren't either.

Builders' merchants

High-density combustible stock, timber, chemicals and complex layouts where trade counters, warehouses and outdoor yards intersect.

Manufacturing & engineering

Industrial processes, heat-generating machinery, hazardous byproducts like dust or chemical vapours, and complex power systems.

Warehousing & logistics

High-bay racking, large fire loads, smoke detection challenges and long travel distances to exits across open-plan spaces.

Garden centres

Retail showrooms, greenhouses, combustible materials like peat composts and dry timber, with high volumes of public visitors.

Metal stockholding

Cutting equipment, welding sparks, hydraulic oils and flammable lubricants - plus access challenges for emergency services.

Construction

Temporary structures, hot work, changing site layouts and multiple contractors creating evolving fire risks.

Offices

Electrical systems, server rooms, communal kitchens and ensuring clear evacuation for desk-based staff and visitors.

Common questions answered

Do I need a new fire risk assessment every year?

The law requires regular review. Best practice is annually, or whenever there's a significant change - building work, new machinery, an incident or a change in how the premises are used.

What happens if you find something expensive to fix?

We work with you to find proportionate solutions. It's not always about big costs - our recommendations are practical and prioritised by actual risk, not worst-case scenarios.

Can you help with staff fire training too?

Yes. We evaluate your current training provision and help you address any gaps. We offer interactive e-learning modules and can coordinate fire warden training alongside your assessment.

How is this different from a tick-box assessment?

We assess your actual operation, not a generic template. Our consultants have enforcement backgrounds - they know the difference between compliance that looks good on paper and measures that actually protect your business.

What if we've had an incident or enforcement notice?

Contact us immediately. We understand the urgency when enforcement bodies are involved and can help you respond appropriately and get your compliance back on track.

We already have someone in-house - do we still need you?

If your in-house person leaves, you still need competent fire safety cover. Many businesses find a consultancy is more cost-effective than replacing that role, and you get specialist expertise across sectors.
